Aegina is just an hour or so from Athens. It is an island that will enchant you with its light and flavors, its atmosphere and its sunsets.
It has been inhabited since ancient times and everything bears witness to its progress through time. Stone houses and cobblestone streets, the Temple of Aphaia with its shining marble, turquoise waters and sandy beaches, pistachio and pine trees, coves and harbors, all make up the diverse character of Aegina. The island that was loved by writers, sculptors and painters, that was plundered by pirates and conquered by conquerors, will charm you with its natural beauty and rich history.
How to get Aegina
You can reach Aegina by ferry from Piraeus, either by conventional ferry or by flying dolphin. Ferries to the island depart from gate E8, on Tzelepi coast. Itineraries vary depending on the season.
Things to do
Hiking tourism: Aegina is full of hiking trails, as a result of which the island has been included in the “Cultural Trails” network. Hiking on the island will revitalize your body but at the same time keep you interested, since these routes will lead you to ancient settlements, old mills and other remains of Aegina’s history.
Excursions to the surrounding islands: If you are looking for something different from your Aegina vacation, a nearby excursion is just the thing. A boat, dolphin or ferry can take you to Moni, Agistri, Methana, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Porto Heli, Ermioni or Epidaurus.
Visit to Karnagio: The island’s Karnagio is located next to the archaeological site of Kolona. At this historical spot, fishermen used to build their boats at the turn of the centuries. Visit it and look for Mr. Nektarios who has been working there since he was 13 years old. Approach him and ask him to tell you his stories.
The Pistachio Festival: The Aegina pistachio is the island’s well-known PDO product and could not help but have its own celebration. Dozens of producers bring their pistachios and other products made from them to the Festival. In addition to the delicacies you will taste, you will also admire other handmade local products, such as ceramics, jewelry and embroidery.
